There becomes a time in every hot tub owners life when your spa pack and hot tub heater will eventually fail. The dilemma will then be whether you replace or repair your heater. This is a question that I guarantee all spa owners will eventually come across. No matter how well built your Spa Heater is, it will eventually fail. There are a few tips that I can share with you that will help you make this decision.

The first thing that has to be considered is the age of your existing spa pack and spa controller. If your hot tub heater is older than 5 years, I would suggest you look at replacing it with a new heater. As a heater ages, the internal parts become worn and also if your tub heater is past 5 years of age, chances are you will continue to experience multiple failures in the coming years.

The technology of your heater is also important. If your hot tub heater fails, you may benefit from buying a new heater with more modern technology. Digital spa packs are much more accurate than analog spa packs. They give you an accurate temperature reading right at the LED display and you can adjust the spa temperature without leaving the hot tub. A digital spa heater is made from solid state construction which means there are no moving parts that can wear down.

Is your spa heater element blown? If this is the case then you may find you can quickly fix your spa heater with a minimal investment. Changing a spa heater element is something that most spa owners can do themselves. This means no added costs for a service technician.

Operating cost savings! Most new spa packs manufacturer's such as Balboa have programmable energy savings options built into their spa pack. This means you can set you tub temperature to economy modes when you are away. The programmable advantages of a digital pack could pay for itself just in operating cost savings.

How handy are you? Do you understand circuit boards and can you trouble shoot faulty spa packs? If you answered no then you are looking at calling in a hot tub service technician. This can range for $70-$100/hour plus travel. If they have to take the spa heater back to their shop then you are looking at another return call and more money. In the end you may end up paying $100's of dollars even though it may only be a $10 faulty part.

Look at the cost to repair versus replacing your spa heater. Most brand new state of the art spa packs start in the range of about $500 and up. This means a new warranty and all new parts. The average repair bill for a hot tub heater is around $400 and up. Do the math, and in most cases you will find in the long term, you may be throwing away good money.

Most customers get caught into the mindset that they need to buy the same spa pack that is in their existing hot tub system. A hot tub is no different than an automobile, you don't need to buy brakes at your dealership when you can save 50% or more buy going to your local garage for the same brakes. The good news is 99% of all hot tubs can easily be replaced with another manufacturer's spa pack. You can shop around and look for a quality spa pack that meets your budget.

120 vs 240 hot tub set up..?

im going to get my 1st hot tub and im trying to figure out if 120 or 240volt is better..
my understanding is 240 pulls less amps? making it cheaper to run?
i have some heavy gauge wire and theres a 220v plug in my garage.. looks like a normal outlet but top 2 prongs are horz instead of verticle..
would i just needa do some simple wiring to get the 240v tub going?
and are there benefits of 240 over 120? thanks

I installed my hot tub using 240 volts. It is less amps, and as easy to wire as 120. Just get the numbers off of the plug on your hot tub, go to the hardware store and get the correct outlet. The one you have now may be the same as the one on your tub.
I wired my tub direct (no plug) with a GFCI, and a disconnect switch because we won't be moving it any time soon. I used 8 Ga. wire and put it in conduit all the way to the connection in the tub.
The closer to the power source the better. Make sure that the tub is level, and that there is good drainage. I leveled my site and used compacted crusher fines from my local concrete company.
Yes, you will generally pay less by going with 240 V.
